ELLSWORTH, Maine — A local man is being held in jail after he allegedly stalked a woman and tried to hide from police.

John H. Lane III, 52, was arrested Saturday evening on misdemeanor charges of stalking, violation of a protection order, violating bail conditions and refusing to submit to arrest, according to a prepared statement from the Ellsworth Police Department.

According to police, the woman got a protection order against Lane in early July. He previously was arrested on July 15 after violating that order and was released on bail, police said in the statement.

On Saturday, Lane was seen leaving his residence and then parking in a parking lot 500 feet from where the woman lives, they added.

“The suspect then went to the property of the victim and began banging on her air conditioner, which was in her window,” the statement indicated. “Officers converged on the area, and the suspect fled into the woods.”

Police found Lane about an hour later, after he returned to the woman’s residence and tried to hide himself in vegetation in her backyard, they said. He was being held Monday at Hancock County Jail pending an appearance before a judge, police added.
