BANGOR, Maine — A Mattawamkeag couple was indicted Wednesday by the Penobscot County grand jury for allegedly lying about their living situation to illegally obtain food stamps and health care.

Darcie Twist, 38, and Bryant Twist, 39, were indicted on one count of theft by deception. The couple allegedly claimed they were not living together and that he was not contributing financially to the family between March 1, 2009, and Dec. 13, 2014, according to the indictment filed at the Penobscot Judicial Center.

During that time, Darcie Twist allegedly received benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and MaineCare worth more than $10,000. Bryant Twist allegedly knew of and went along with the plan, the indictment said.

If convicted, each faces up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $20,000. The couple also could be ordered to pay restitution.
