BINGHAMTON, New York — The Portland Sea Dogs scored three runs in the first and never looked back, defeating the Binghamton Mets 7-0 Thursday night in their Eastern League series opener at NYSEG Stadium.

Nate Freiman led the charge, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and two doubles. Jalen Beeks (2-2) earned his second Double-A win, working five scoreless innings on two hits and three strikeouts.

Binghamton’s Tyler Pill had beaten Portland four times earlier this year but the ‘Dogs finally solved him during the road win. Pill yielded eight hits and five runs over his five innings pitched.

Freiman gave Portland a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run double to left field. Cody Decker added a run-scoring fielder’s choice.

In the third, Andrew Benintendi singled and scored on Freiman’s double to right-center. Benintendi went 2-for-4 and is now tied for the team lead with 22 multi-hit games in just 61 Double-A starts.

Portland added two moreruns in the sixth on an error by right fielder Kyle Johnson and an RBI double by Aneury Tavarez.

Jake Drehoff allowed three hits in three innings of relief for Portland before Taylor Grover pitched a perfect ninth.
