HARPSWELL, Maine — A Brunswick woman was taken by helicopter to a hospital Tuesday afternoon after falling about 15 feet over an embankment and landing on rocks below.

The 66-year-old woman was trimming trees with her husband at their camp on Tondreau Road just before 5 p.m. when she lost her balance, fell backward over the bank, hit the rocks and ended up in the ocean, Capt. Scott Stewart of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said.

The woman was unconscious when Cundy’s Harbor firefighters arrived, and she was taken by boat to land and then by LifeFlight of Maine to Maine Medical Center in Portland with head injuries, according to Stewart.

“As of last night, she was conscious, but they were going to hold her for 24 hours for observation,” Stewart said.

The woman’s condition was not immediately available Wednesday.
