PORTLAND, Maine — Aneury Tavarez posted four hits on Wednesday, helping the Portland Sea Dogs split an Eastern League doubleheader against Altoona at Hadlock Field.
The Sea Dogs won the opener 4-3 and the Curve bounced back for a 7-4 win in the nightcap.
Portland (46-74) took game one despite issuing 10 walks. Altoona added seven hits, but stranded 12 runners and went 4-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
Trailing 1-0 in the third, Portland tied the game on an RBI single by Mauricio Dubon to score Tzu-Wei Lin. The Sea Dogs took the lead soon thereafter when Tavarez scored on a passed ball.
Tavarez combined to go 4-for-6 in the doubleheader, raising his league-high average to .340.
Nate Freiman hit a solo homer over the Maine Monster in the fourth inning off of Clay Holmes to put Portland ahead 3-1. Holmes (10-8) allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits in five innings, walking two and striking out four.
Making a spot start, Mike McCarthy allowed one run on four hits in three innings with three walks and one strikeout.
Altoona (67-54) tied the game in the fifth on two doubles off of Brandon Workman, who joined the Sea Dogs on Tuesday on rehab assignment by the Boston Red Sox. Workman allowed two runs on three hits in 1⅔ innings with five walks.
Portland took the lead for good on an RBI groundout by Dubon in the fifth to score Rainel Rosario.
Ty Buttrey (1-9) earned his first Double-A victory with 1⅓ innings of scoreless relief. Ben Taylor closed out game one with a perfect seventh for his fourth save.
In game two, Portland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning on Dubon’s third homer of the season. Altoona scored three times in the fourth to pull ahead 3-2, then the Sea Dogs responded in the fourth on a two-run homer by Cole Sturgeon to make it 4-3 Portland.
After three singles by Altoona to lead off the sixth inning, Jonathan Schwind hit a grand slam off of Williams Jerez (1-7) to put the Curve ahead for good 7-4.
Alex McRae (6-6) went the full seven innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while walking one and setting a new career-high with eight strikeouts.
