HOLDEN, Maine — A Hampden man is facing a drug trafficking charge after police found more than 1,000 bags of heroin and an assortment of prescription medications in his possession, according to the Maine State Police.
The street value of the heroin is more than $15,000.
Peter James Tardiff, 30, is charged with aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, a Class A crime, according Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety. The charge is aggravated because Tardiff was staying within 1,000 feet of a Holden school.
Tardiff was stopped Wednesday by Holden police Sgt. Eduardo Benjamin on a traffic-related arrest warrant out of York County, McCausland said Thursday in a news release. Holden police and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency had been investigating the distribution of heroin in Penobscot County.
If convicted, Tardiff faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.
Tardiff was being held Thursday at Penobscot County Jail, unable to post $15,000 cash bail.
McCausland said the Maine State Police also assisted in the ongoing investigation and that more arrests are likely.
