WESTBROOK, Maine — The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland said it received a cat from a concerned citizen who found it in a locked trunk at a baseball field.

The cat, named Sky, is about 1 years old. Upon arrival at the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, Sky received a full medical evaluation from the group’s staff and veterinary team.

Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland said the cat has a significant amount of fleas and flea dirt on it but otherwise is in fair condition. Sky is affectionate and well-socialized; she appears to be a family pet.

Two Buxton residents were taking a walk at the Hollis Sports Complex fields about 6 a.m. Monday. At the end of their walk, they noticed a large trunk in the parking lot. When they attempted to open the trunk, they heard the crying of a cat inside, according to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.

Unable to open the trunk, the two Buxton residents took it to a friend’s house who opened it with a screwdriver. Sky was in the trunk, without food or water.

The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland is asking anyone who recognizes Sky or has information about her abandonment to call 854-9771.

Hollis officials are working with the sheriff’s office on an investigation into the situation.

Pending her continued good health, Sky will be available for adoption on Saturday, Sept. 3.
