PORTLAND, Maine — Several people have been displaced following an overnight apartment building fire in Portland.
The fire was in a three-story building on 732 Forest Ave., at the corner with Pleasant Avenue.
Portland Fire Chief David Jackson said seven to eight people live in the building.
He said a woman called 911 after smelling smoke around 1:30 a.m.
Investigators said no one was injured in the fire.
Jackson said there were intense flames at the back of the building when crews first arrived.
“It’s a three-story, six-unit building. We are very fortunate that everybody got out, and certainly I want to praise the men and the women of the Portland Fire Department. It was really quite a hard battle — the job they did to save the building and put out as much fire as they did when they arrived,” Jackson said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the Red Cross is assisting fire victims.
Forest Avenue was closed to traffic for several hours but has since reopened.
