MASARDIS, Maine — Two northern Maine men are facing arson charges after allegedly setting a truck on fire in order to claim insurance proceeds.

The state fire marshal’s office has charged John Craig, 47, of Masardis and Richard Gilman, 23, of Millinocket with arson and conspiracy to commit arson in connection with an April 10 truck fire, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The fire destroyed a 2012 Kenworth truck at the work yard of John Craig Trucking on Garfield Road in Masardis, and fire investigators said Craig later attempted to collect insurance proceeds on the rig. Craig also has been charged with insurance fraud and false swearing, according to the press release.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Gilman, an employee of Craig’s, was being held at the Aroostook County Jail on $10,000 cash bail. Craig, who was arrested on Aug. 25, was released on $10,000 cash bail. Both are expected to appear in court in September.
