HAMPDEN, Maine — Members of the town’s Public Safety Department and volunteers from an Orono-based search-and-rescue group were searching the woods off Western Avenue for a 72-year-old man with dementia on Thursday.

Charles Hamel of Hampden has not been seen since about 5:15 p.m. Thursday, according to a post on the Hampden Public Safety Facebook page.

Hamel, who is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds, was last seen heading into the woods near the Hampden-Newburgh town line, according to the post.

Hamel has blue eyes, thinning gray hair and was wearing tan pants and a blue and white striped shirt, according to the post.

Personnel from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine Warden Service and volunteers from the Down East Emergency Medical Institute also are involved in the effort to find Hamel.

Down East Emergency Medical Institute Operations Director Richard Bowie said Thursday night that in addition to search teams, the group has brought its forward looking infrared technology to the area in which Hamel is believed to be.

Anyone with information on Hamel’s whereabouts is asked to call Hampden police at 862-4000.
