HARPSWELL, Maine — About two dozen pigs escaped Tuesday morning from their pen on Route 123 in Harpswell, blocking traffic on the main road to and from Harpswell Neck until they were cajoled back into the enclosure.

Brunswick Animal Control Officer Heidi Nelson said she and Brunswick police Officer Aaron Bailey went to the farm, about a half-mile into Harpswell on what is known as Harpswell Road, just after 10:30 a.m. to block traffic while the unidentified farmer enticed the herd with a bucket of milk.

“Of course, there were two hold-outs, but they were eventually persuaded to join their friends and all were put back into their pen,” Nelson said in a message to the Bangor Daily News.

The road was cleared about 15 minutes after police arrived, according to Nelson.
