BANGOR, Maine — An empty car rolled backward through a busy downtown Bangor intersection Monday and somehow didn’t hit anyone.

The car’s driver, Rachel Fuller, said she parked her vehicle outside the post office, pointing uphill and set the parking brake before walking into a nearby office with her 5-month-old infant.

At some point shortly after 11:30 a.m., the car rolled backward down the hill, crossing several lanes of traffic and passing through a busy intersection and several crosswalks before striking a tree just outside Mexicali Blues, about 500 feet from where it started. The car missed an electrical control box by just a few feet. Had the tree not been there, the vehicle likely could have jumped the curb and struck the business.

“It’s amazing, really,” Fuller said. “Thank God no one got hurt.”

Fuller said she believes the brake failed.

The car appeared to have only minor damage, including a dented bumper, broken tail light and bent trunk.
