Army CB Jackson dies in car crash

Army starting cornerback Brandon Jackson died Sunday following a single-car crash in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.

The academy released a statement Monday morning confirming that Jackson, a native of Queens, N.Y., died in the accident. He was 20.

Croton-on-Hudson is 19 miles south of the U.S. Military Academy.

“We will honor his life as we mourn the untimely death of a young man who had a promising future as a leader in service to our Nation,” Lt. Gen. Robert L. Caslen Jr., superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy, wrote in a letter to the West Point community. “Brandon internalized our watch words, Duty, Honor, Country.”

Jackson died just hours after Army’s 31-14 victory over Rice on Saturday. The sophomore had three tackles in the win. Jackson appeared in every game as a freshman in 2015 and led the Black Knights with three interceptions.

“Words cannot describe the grief that our team is feeling over the loss of our brother and friend, Brandon” Army coach Jeff Monken said in a statement. “He was a beloved teammate and our hearts are with his family at this time of tragedy.”

Indians’ Salazar likely done for season

Cleveland Indians All-Star pitcher Danny Salazar’s season most likely is over.

On Monday, an MRI exam on his right forearm showed a mild strain of the flexor muscle. He won’t be able to pick up a baseball for at least 10 days and he won’t be able to pitch for three to four weeks.

If the Indians were to advance deep in the playoffs there would be a chance he could pitch again, but manager Terry Francona isn’t counting on seeing the 26-year-old back on the mound anytime soon.

Salazar is scheduled to receive a platelet rich plasma injection to speed up the process.

Salazar compiled a 10-3 record with a 2.75 ERA in the first half of the season to earn his first All-Star appearance. But he didn’t pitch in the game because of elbow fatigue.

Season over for Harrison

Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Josh Harrison will miss the rest of the regular season after suffering a groin injury in Saturday’s game.

Harrison is expected to be sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. There’s a chance he could return if the Pirates advance to the postseason.

“No words to really say,” Harrison told reporters Monday. “I’m OK. It could’ve been worse. I left it all out there. There’s still a chance if we make a run, you may see me back out there if we somehow find our way.”

In his first full year as Pittsburgh’s starting second baseman, Harrison ends the season batting .283 with four home runs, 59 RBIs and 19 stolen bases.

Georgia undecided on starting QB

Head coach Kirby Smart is extending the quarterback competition at Georgia even with the Southeastern Conference opener a matter of days at Missouri.

Freshman Jacob Eason started last week against Nicholls State after Greyson Lambert got the call in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff in Atlanta in the Bulldogs’ season opener.

The Bulldogs will determine a starting quarterback based on practice and the final game plan, Smart said.

“They’re both going to continue to rep,” Smart said.

Lambert, a senior, entered Saturday’s game with 7:50 remaining after Eason threw an interception returned 91 yards for a touchdown.
