ERIE, Pennsylvania — Two-time Maine women’s amateur champion Staci Creech of Veazie participated in the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur over the weekend, making it to the match play round before her run in the tourney came to an end Monday.

Creech, the wife of University of Maine athletic director Karlton Creech, finished the two-round, stroke-play portion of the tournament at 18 over par at the Kahkwa Club Saturday and Sunday, but earned the last of the qualifying spots into match play.

Staci Creech, 43, advanced to take on tournament top seed Shannon Johnson of Norton, Massachusetts, who defeated Creech 5 and 3 in Monday’s match play.

Johnson took the lead on the second hole and never relinquished it, closing out Creech on the 15th hole.

Creech has won the last two Maine women’s amateur championships in her first two appearances in the tournament.

Creech, a native of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, played her college golf at the University of North Carolina.

Karlton Creech has served as UMaine’s athletic administrator since January 2014.
