BRUNSWICK, Maine — More than a year after Mid Coast Hospital acquired Parkview Adventist Medical Center and consolidated Brunswick’s two hospitals into one, Mid Coast-Parkview Health on Tuesday said it would break ground this fall on a $6.2 million renovation of the Parkview facility into a new primary care practice, community health and wellness center and and expanded oncology practice that is aligned with MaineHealth/Maine Medical Center and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute of Boston.

“This past year, we have worked diligently toward fulfilling our goals of reducing costs and expanding services to support the health care needs of our community,” Lois Skillings, president and CEO of Mid Coast-Parkview Health, said in a release Tuesday.

The plan is designed “to best accommodate growth while improving access to care,” she said.

About 9,000 square feet of the former facility has already been renovated and now hosts the hospital’s accounting, patient financial services and other departments, according to a release. A number of nonclinical departments also have moved to the Parkview campus, freeing up clinical space, which Randee Reynolds, vice president of community health and former president of Parkview Adventist Medical Center, said has made the Maine Street facility seem “more vibrant.”

Physicians and other staff are being recruited for the new primary care practice, according to Steven Trockman, spokesman for Mid Coast-Parkview Health, who said he wasn’t sure how many positions overall would be created by the renovation and expansion.

The 9,000-square-foot wellness center will host a seven-provider primary care practice as well as a cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs, diabetes and cancer medical exercise and other preventative programs, the expanded oncology practice and an adjoining 4,300-square-foot infusion center.

“We’re finally consolidating all of our community health and wellness initiatives,” Trockman said. “It is really, in large part, the future of our organization.”
