MACHIAS, Maine — A local man remained in Washington County Jail on Tuesday after being charged with robbing a bank the day before, according to the Machias police chief.

Devon Scott Andrews, 41, has been charged with robbery in connection with the armed hold-up of Camden National Bank, Chief Grady Dwelley said Tuesday.

Andrews was arrested Monday after several area law enforcement agencies dealt with reports of separate armed robberies in Machias, one at Main Street Discount and another about 30 minutes later at the bank.

Andrews was found and taken into custody without struggle by Washington County Sheriff Barry Curtis and some of Curtis’ deputies on a side street near the bank, the chief said.

Andrews was arrested Monday on charges of violating probation and drug possession. The robbery charge was filed Tuesday when Andrews made his initial court appearance in Machias, Dwelley said.

Additional charges may be filed against Andrews, including one in connection with the alleged robbery of the Main Street business, according to the chief. Bail for Andrews has been set at $50,000 cash, he added.

Dwelley said Monday that about 9 a.m., a clerk at Main Street Discount called police to report that an armed white man in his late 20s or early 30s and about 5 feet, 10 inches tall had just robbed the store.

A few minutes later, police went to the University of Maine at Machias for a reported sighting of a suspect on campus who matched the description, but they found nothing, Dwelley said. The chief declined to describe the kind of clothing the alleged robber was reported to have been wearing.

At about 9:30 a.m., police received a report of a robbery at Camden National Bank, on Route 1 near the Hannaford supermarket.

“There was a sizeable amount of money taken from the bank,” Dwelley said Monday.

The bank remained closed Monday after the incident.
