SABATTUS, Maine — The first major women’s Professional Disc Golf Association championships to be held in New England will take place in Maine this weekend.

The U.S. Women’s Disc Golf Championships will be held from Friday through Sunday at the Sabattus Disc Golf Course.

The PDGA is celebrating its 40th anniversary as the professional association for disc golfers, and 100 players are expected to compete in Maine this weekend.

The field includes players from Colorado, California, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Ontario, Texas and Wisconsin.

A pair of local breweries, Gritty McDuff’s and Baxter Brewing Company, have joined the USWDGC in supporting the tournament, which will support the Dempsey Center.

The Dempsey Center improves the quality of life for those affected by cancer, and proceeds from the event will be gifted to the organization.

Gritty McDuff’s will be providing its “Dempsey’s Courage Ale” for the tourney’s opening ceremonies and during a player’s dinner prepared by Moe’s Original Bar B Que.

Baxter Brewing Company also is creating an IPA for the tournament brewed to benefit the Dempsey Center.

Avery Jenkins, the brother of four-time disc golf world champion Valarie Jenkins and himself a disc golf champ, introduced Baxter Brewing owner Peter Ruby to the idea of brewing an IPA for the tournament.

Jenkins and her husband, three-time world champion Nate Doss, were invited from Oregon to collaborate with Baxter Brewing on a limited released red IPA. The recipe name will be unveiled at the start of the tournament, at which Jenkins will compete.

BDN sports freelancer Ryan McLaughlin grew up in Brewer and is a lifelong fan of the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins.
