SUMNER, Maine — Police say they’re looking for whoever threw four kittens out of a moving car in western Maine.

Two of them died. One is blind. A fourth is fine.

The four kittens were found on the side of Gammon Road in Sumner. All four are believed to have been thrown from a car. Two of the kittens were found dead, one appears to have been severely beaten, and the fourth was uninjured.

“Lucky,” is the name Micaiah Roy gave the kitten that walked away without a scratch after likely being thrown from a moving vehicle.

A veterinarian said another kitten, Boo, was either beaten beforehand or suffered a severe head injury when he was thrown from a car, and is now blind from his injuries.

“It’s heart wrenching to see something like that happen,” Roy said. “And especially, I live in Buckfield. So to me, that’s ten minutes from my house.”

Micaiah Roy, founder of Community Cat Advocates, said any number of animal shelters would have taken those kittens in.

“I know that people get themselves in situations where they don’t know what to do with cats. But there is always a solution. And that’s not it,” Roy said. “It’s never the answer to hurt them.”

Kelsey Sellman helped examine Lucky.

“With Lucky, she came out of this situation completely unscathed,” Sellman said.

She said the picture of Boo lying next to his dead sister is awful. The other kitten that died was later hit by a car. An investigation is underway to try and find the person who did this. But Micaiah Roy said even if someone is caught, they may only get a slap on the wrist.

“They should be singled out and they should be punished,” Roy said. “And we should have harsher laws, for sure.”

The veterinarian believes this litter was born on or near the Fourth of July. If you think you know who owned these kittens, call the Oxford County Animal Control Officer at (207) 357-2818.
