ORONO — The Eastern Maine Baseball Umpires Association will hold a free umpiring clinic, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m., on Jan. 15, 2017, at University of Maine’s Mahaney Dome. HAMPDEN — The Eastern Maine Board 111 of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials is offering a Prospective Officials Class for anyone 18 or older who is interested in becoming a certified basketball official. People living in Hancock, Knox, Penobscot, Piscataquis and Waldo counties are eligible to take the class, which will be held 6-8:30 p.m. Sundays and Wednesdays, starting Sunday, Oct. 2, at Reeds Brook Middle School, Room 164. ORRINGTON — The fifth annual Muskrat Scramble Canoe/Kayak race will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, starting just beyond Bob’s Kozy Korner store on Brewer Lake Road, near intersection with Johnson Mill Road. Flat water on winding course with negligible current. Choose 4.5- or 2.5-mile distance. Many classes to choose from to enter. Boats lent by prior arrangement. Modest prizes and food. No entry fee. CROSS COUNTRY

OLD TOWN — The Maine USATF fall cross country program begins Sunday, Oct. 9, at Smiling Hill Farm and at Old Town High School. It is the first of four preliminary meets to be held at various locations around the state. Entry fee is $4 and USATF registration of $15 youth, $30 adult is required and available at all the meets. Registration begins at 12:15 p.m. Course walks will begin at 1 p.m. The first race begins at 2 p.m. The age divisions are 8 and under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18, 19-29, and 30 and up at five-year intervals. ORONO — Join Orono Land Trust members and friends at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23, at for a visit of Pine Pond. View a new beaver lodge, and walk to Heron Pond to see a new “beaver deceiver” to stabilize the water level. This informational tour will be augmented by OLT Board member, Dr. Steve Sader, who will have identified and labeled and flagged several species of trees that occur along the trails to these ponds. Directions: Forest Avenue to Taylor Road (that leads to Orono Town Landfill) and travel north until you veer to the left onto Putnum Rd. Park at the lot near the OLT Kiosk, then walk north to the OLT trail and to the road that extends north along Black Pond—it is short walk to Pine and Heron ponds. Free.

ICE HOCKEY

ORONO — The Maine Junior Black Bears will host a Media Day 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at Alfond Arena, during which the team will hold a food drive and there will be a retirement ceremony at 1:20 p.m. for jersey No. 26 in honor of Dylan McInnis who died in the spring. There also will be a parent meeting, player meeting and Tier 4 manager meeting.

ROAD RACING

ORONO — The Black Bear 5K Race will start at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 23. All early entries must be received at Campus Recreation no later than 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21. Late registration and number pick-up will take place in the Fieldhouse in the Memorial Gym starting at 9:30 a.m. Registration cost is $12. BANGOR — The Penobscot Valley Ski Club will hold its annual ski and snowboard equipment sale, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 15, at Bangor Parks and Recreation, 647 Main St. New and used equipment including cross country and downhill skis, boots, poles, apparel, helmets and snowboards will be available at discounted prices. Bring used equipment to sell 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14. The cost to participate is $1 per item. Name your price and the club will sell it for you, less a 15 percent commission. CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Carrabassett Valley Academy’s annual Ski and Sports Equipment Sale will be held 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Anti Gravity Complex in Carrabassett Valley.
