BOOTHBAY, Maine – A fire last weekend that killed two men was caused by a child playing with matches, the state fire marshal’s office has determined.
According to McCausland, a couch in a first-floor living room caught fire and the fire quickly spread throughout the two-story house.
Julie Gilbert, 48, of Chicago was taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment of burns. He boyfriend, Baldomero “Bart” Zamora, 50, died in the fire, as did Gilbert’s 23-year-old son, Lucas Farias. Both were also from Chicago.
Police said at the time that a Winslow woman and her two children were sleeping near the living room where the fire started.
Police do not plan to charge the child due to the child’s age, and instead will refer the child to counseling.
The home, which was rented for the weekend to celebrate Zamora’s 50th birthday, had three working smoke detectors, according to the fire marshals’ office.
