WINTHROP, Maine — A local man was charged with burning down his own home early Thursday morning.

Charles Reed, 64, is accused of setting fire to his mobile home at 386 Route 133, according to a release from the state fire marshal’s office.

Reed was charged with arson for a May 1, 2014 fire at his former home in Monmouth. On Tuesday, he was charged with arson and violation of conditions of release. He was brought to the Kennebec County Correctional Facility.

The fire marshal’s office had four investigators on scene.

The fire was reported around 2 a.m., and the Winthrop Fire Department responded, with assistance from the Lakes Region Mutual aid group and the Monmouth Fire Department.

The Winthrop Ambulance Service and the Winthrop and Monmouth police departments also assisted.
