ORONO — Maine Saturday Night Hitting Clinics for youth in grades 8 and under, 4:30-6 p.m.,  and for high school players, 6-7:30 p.m., at University of Maine. The clinic is designed to help create bat speed and better swing mechanics. There are two sessions because of Christmas break. ORONO — The Maine Junior Black Bears will host a Media Day 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at Alfond Arena, during which the team will hold a food drive and there will be a retirement ceremony at 1:20 p.m. for jersey No. 26 in honor of Dylan McInnis who died last spring. There also will be a parent meeting, player meeting and Tier 4 manager meeting.

ROAD RACING

ORONO — The Black Bear 5K Race will start at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 23. All early entries must be received at Campus Recreation no later than 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21. Late registration and number pick-up will take place in the New Balance Field House starting at 9:30 a.m. Registration cost is $12. BANGOR — Bangor American Legion is organizing its annual 3K road race to help raise funds to support local veterans and their families. The “For Our Vets Purple Heart Run” will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, prior to the start of the annual Bangor/Brewer Veteran’s Day Parade. The Purple Heart Run starts  in Brewer and ends in Downtown Bangor. There is a recommended donation of $20 per runner. Teams from schools, businesses and organizations are also welcome to show their support for our veterans. Free T-shirts will be given to the first 100 registered runners. CAPE ELIZABETH — The Cape Elizabeth High School Ski Team 2016 Ski Swap will be held with dropoff 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, and the swap 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, at the middle school. Proceeds support the high school’s Alpine ski team. Drop off/pickup: Bring in skis, boots, poles, and ski gear to sell or donate to the swap. Sellers can name their price. Equipment needs to be recent and functional. Cape Elizabeth Alpine will keep 20 percent of swap sales. You will be called to pick up whatever does not sell. SWIMMING

PORTLAND — Natural Resources Council of Maine’s ninth annual Polar Bear Dip & Dash will be held Saturday, Dec. 31, in Portland’s East End. A 5K “warm-up” run around Portland’s Back Cove trail will be held at 11 a.m., with registration beginning at 9 a.m. at the Back Cove parking lot across from Hannaford. The Polar Bear Dip will be held at noon, with registration at 11 a.m. A shuttle will return participants to Back Cove parking lot after the dip. Prizes from local businesses for 5K winners by age class, and also for best costume, and top fundraisers.
