MACHIAS, Maine — A Washington County Jail inmate died on Friday after he was found unconscious with a head wound in his dorm area, Washington County Sheriff Barry Curtis confirmed in a Tuesday news release.

Around 10:40 a.m. Friday, corrections officers found James Roy, 55, lying unconscious on the floor of his “assigned dorm area” with an apparent head wound, according to the release. Another inmate had alerted jail staff.

An ambulance took Roy to Down East Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about three hours later, Curtis said.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says it does not think Roy’s death was suspicious, a belief they say is “corroborated by evidence recovered,” according to the release.

The state medical examiner’s office is expected to determine the cause of Roy’s death.

“The sheriff’s office also is working with the Maine Department of Corrections to conduct a review of jail procedures, which is standard practice in situations like this,” Curtis said.
