GREENE, Maine — A 41-year-old Winthrop man died early Thursday morning after his 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee went off Route 202 near the intersection of Key Hill Road and struck several trees.
Craig Ward died at the crash scene, Androscoggin County Chief Deputy William Gagne said in a news release.
Gagne said that it is was not yet clear why Ward lost control of his vehicle but that speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors.
According to Gagne, the crash was reported at 4:23 a.m. He said the crash remains under investigation.
The section of Route 202 on which the crash occurred is posted at 50 mph, Gagne said. He said the road temporarily was closed to traffic to allow for the accident investigation but was reopened at about 7 a.m.
