ORONO — The Maine Junior Black Bears will host a Media Day 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at Alfond Arena, during which the team will hold a food drive and there will be a retirement ceremony at 1:20 p.m. for jersey No. 26 in honor of Dylan McInnis who died last spring. There also will be a parent meeting, player meeting and Tier 4 manager meeting.
BRUNSWICK — Midcoast Youth Hockey will offer Learn to Play Hockey program free to first-time skaters, who will skate 20 times at Bowdoin’s Watson Arena, usually on Sundays, under the supervision of MCYH’s coaching staff. There also will be a co-ed team for 13- and 14-year-olds, which will compete in the Maine T4 “house” league. There also is a travel team for peewees. Both peewees and squirts will now have the opportunity to compete in Maine’s “house” league and in the more competitive travel league. The Learn to Play season runs from Nov. 6 to early March. BANGOR — Bangor American Legion is organizing its annual 3K road race to help raise funds to support local veterans and their families. The “For Our Vets Purple Heart Run” will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, prior to the start of the annual Bangor/Brewer Veteran’s Day Parade. The Purple Heart Run starts in Brewer and ends in Downtown Bangor. There is a recommended donation of $20 per runner. Teams from schools, businesses and organizations are also welcome to show their support for our veterans. Free T-shirts will be given to the first 100 registered runners. ORONO — The University of Maine softball winter clinics will be offered every Sunday from Jan. 22 through Feb 26. The team will offer pitching and hitting sessions and all participants are invited to sign up for the skill session of their choice or both. Pitching sessions will be held 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and hitting sessions will be held 12:45-1:45 p.m.Prices vary depending on the option chosen. All sessions will be held in the Mahaney Dome on the University of Maine campus with UMaine softball staff and players conducting the programs. Ages 9 through high school seniors are invited to attend. Players will be divided by age and skill level. Space is limited.
