HOLDEN, Maine — The RSU 63 board has named veteran educator Susan M. Smith its superintendent.
Smith, who has been the district’s curriculum coordinator, also will continue to serve in that capacity, school board spokeswoman Rusty Gagnon said Friday.
Smith has been curriculum and instruction director since 2012 and holds the required state superintendent certification, Gagnon said.
She also holds a certificate of advanced study in educational leadership, a master’s in human development and a bachelor’s in elementary education.
“I am honored and excited to be RSU 63’s superintendent of schools,” Smith said Friday of her new role with RSU 63, which is made up of Holden, Eddington and Clifton.
“This district’s students and employees are important to me. I take very seriously that the citizens of Clifton, Eddington and Holden have entrusted their young people to our care, and I expect our excellent staff to give their best every day,” she said.
“I am proud of our district and the collaborative efforts made in and out of the classroom that impact our students for a lifetime,” she said.
Smith has been employed since 1989 in a variety of education positions.
Before signing on with RSU 63, Smith served as curriculum coordinator for RSU 24 — Eastbrook, Franklin, Gouldsboro, Mariaville, Sorrento, Steuben, Sullivan, Waltham and Winter Harbor — from 2005 through 2012.
Before that, Smith was a comprehensive student support resource teacher in Mililani, Hawaii, and taught at elementary schools in Ellsworth and Bangor, according to her resume.
Smith succeeds former Superintendent Kenneth Smith, who had been serving in that capacity since July 1, 2015.
