BERWICK, Maine — A family managed to safely escape from a house fire in Berwick, but three of their pets died in the blaze.
Firefighters responded to the report of a house fire at 6 p.m. Saturday at the residence on Long Swamp Road.
Berwick fire Chief Dennis Plante said there were heavy flames coming from the back of the house when firefighters arrived. “Shortly after getting here we put on a second alarm, which brought in another three departments, and we had the fire under control in about 30 minutes.”
There were four people, including two children, inside the house when the fire broke out, all of whom made it out safely, according to fire officials. But fire officials believe two cats and a dog died in the fire.
The fire remained under investigation Sunday morning.
