HOLDEN, Maine — An unidentified woman suffered significant but not life-threatening head wounds when a pistol-carrying man attacked her during a home invasion at her Dayze Way home on Monday, police said.

The man had a covering over his face and escaped, but is not considered a threat to the public, Holden Police Chief Chris Greeley said. The woman, meanwhile, was conscious and spoke to police when they responded to the incident, which was reported at about 8:30 p.m.

“There was quite a bit of blood,” Greeley said Monday.

A Bangor police dog and its handler helped police search for evidence, Greeley said. No weapon was found and the short track the dog followed indicated to police that the assailant fled the area in a vehicle, possibly parked in the driveway of the house. The address is a few hundred yards off the South Road intersection near Route 46.

Greeley described the incident as an attempted robbery but said nothing appeared to have been stolen. He said the woman and the man she lived with there appear to have been targeted by the attacker, who appeared to be young, possibly in his 20s. It was unclear why she was targeted.

Several state and Holden police officers responded to the incident. Authorities continued to search for the suspect late Monday night.
