BREWER, Maine — City Hall was on lockdown for about 20 minutes Friday afternoon as police dealt with a report of shots fired on nearby Union Street that were actually fireworks. No injuries were reported.

Police cruisers blocked Union Street between North Main and Summer streets as a precaution because police have a history with tenants at an apartment building in the area, Chief Deputy Chris Martin said. City Hall is opposite the North Main and Union streets intersection.

With weapons drawn, three officers went door to door through most of the neighborhood before they found spent firecrackers near an eight-apartment building at 98 Union St. Police are working to locate the man who reportedly set them off, Martin said, adding that neighbors said the man left to go shopping.

Resident Bill Higgins said that police have been called to that address for two heroin overdoses and for a dumpster set ablaze this summer.

“The police are trying to figure out what’s going on,” Higgins said.

BDN writers Nick Sambides Jr. and Dawn Gagnon contributed to this report.
