WINDHAM, Maine — A woman was found dead after a fast-moving fire swept through her home early Friday morning.

The state fire marshal’s office said 60-year-old Marie McAllister was found dead inside her bedroom. She reportedly lived alone in the single-family home.

The fire was called in around 4 a.m. Friday. When firefighters arrived, the single-story home just off Route 302 was engulfed in flames.

Neighbors say they are keeping the victim’s family in their prayers.

For Monique Kezer and her family, waking up and seeing the home across the street engulfed in flames was scary.

“My boyfriend woke me up saying the house was on fire,” Kezer said.

Firefighters from several different towns came to help fight the fire and quickly were able to get it under control. But after the fire was knocked down, they discovered a body.

For Kezer and her small family, this comes as a harrowing reminder to make sure their home is safe in case of a fire.

“It makes you think about, you know, we got to check our smoke detectors and talk to our kids about fire safety and what happens if they are in a fire,” Kezer said.

Officials with the state fire marshal’s office planned to remain at the home for most of the day in an effort to determine the cause of the fire.
