NORTH YARMOUTH, Maine — State police have located a 78-year-old New Gloucester man who went missing after a wrecker pulled his truck out of a snowbank Thursday morning.

Police say the man slid off the road as he was traveling to a medical appointment.

Frank Birch did not make it to the appointment, causing police to issue a “silver alert.”

But, shortly before 6 p.m., he reportedly called his wife from a store in Gardiner to say he had been Christmas shopping, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Birch, who police say has “issues with memory loss,” reportedly was confused about his location when he called his wife. A state trooper joined the phone conversation and helped determine his location. At that point, Gardiner police met him at the store to confirm he was safe.
