BANGOR, Maine — Two people are dead after separate crashes in Westbrook and Whitefield, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Friday afternoon.

In Westbrook, a man was struck along the Maine Turnpike while he was outside his vehicle. The crash took place near Exit 48 in the northbound lanes.

In Whitefield, Maine State Police troopers reported that a West Gardiner man was killed when a dump truck overturned off Doyle Road. The truck ended up on its side and struck a tree.

The victim has been identified as Robert Frith, 62, an employee of BHS Inc. of Farmingdale, McCausland said. He said that troopers say the truck, loaded with gravel, went off the unpaved road about 1:30 p.m. and that Frith died at the scene.

Doyle Road was closed after the crash so that troopers could investigate and to allow heavy equipment brought to the scene to remove the truck.
