WESTBROOK, Maine — A 22-year-old local man died Sunday morning after his car crashed into the Stroudwater River in Westbrook.

The victim was identified as Fouad Abdullah of Westbrook, Capt. Steven Goldberg of the Westbrook Police Department said early Sunday evening.

The crash was discovered around 10 a.m. Sunday when a passerby notified police that a 2011 Chevrolet Cruze was partially submerged in the river, Westbrook Police Chief Janine Roberts said in a statement Sunday afternoon.

Officers arrived at the Spring Street bridge to find the car on its roof with only its rear tires and trunk exposed, Roberts said.

The Westbrook Fire Department secured the vehicle and determined that Abdullah, who was the sole occupant, was dead.

The exact time and cause of the crash are unknown, Roberts said, adding that the case remains under investigation.

The Maine medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and Windham Police Department are assisting with reconstructing the crash.
