AUBURN, Maine — A child was taken to the hospital after a late-night apartment building fire in Auburn.
Auburn’s battalion chief said a 4-year-old boy and one woman were sent to the hospital.
The boy suffered nosebleed and nausea, likely from smoke inhalation, and the woman suffered first degree burns on her hands.
The battalion chief said the call came in just after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and when they arrived at 495 Court Street, heavy flames were coming from the first floor.
The flames quickly spread through the three-story apartment building.
He said he believes three or four people lived in the building, but only two people, including the 4-year-old boy, were sent to the hospital with minor injuries.
The battalion chief said someone inside called and reported the fire as a kitchen fire but they do not know if cooking caused the blaze.
He said while they got the bulk of the fire knocked down relatively quickly, crews were on scene for hours as the flames continued to spread throughout the apartments.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office will be back on scene Thursday to try and determine the cause.
The Red Cross is assisting the families displaced by the fire.
