BREWER, Maine — Five police vehicles converged on Brewer High School shortly after noon Wednesday, responding to a bomb threat — later determined to be a hoax — that resulted in charges against a student.

A 17-year-old male student from Brewer was charged with terrorizing, Public Safety Director Jason Moffitt said Wednesday afternoon. The name of the teen charged was not released because he is a juvenile.

Police were called to the school on Parkway South to investigate “a non-specific threat directed at the high school,” Moffitt said earlier, shortly after officers arrived.

“We responded quickly and determined it was a hoax,” the police chief said. Moffitt did not release any further details, including about how the threat was issued or discovered.

The school was not evacuated and members of the public were seen coming and going from the main entrance at around noon where an officer was stationed.

“All students and faculty are safe and there is no need for alarm,” Superintendent Cheri Towle said in an email issued a few minutes after noon.

By about 12:30 p.m., the officers on scene had left the area.
