The University of Maine at Presque Isle has tapped Dan Kane as its new athletic administrator and men’s basketball coach, the school announced Tuesday.

The Bradford native fills the two positions vacated when Mike Holmes accepted a position as athletic director at Franciscan University.

“I am very pleased that the University is bringing Dan Kane on board as our new Athletic Director,” UMPI President Ray Rice said in a statement.

Kane spent last winter as an assistant at Connecticut College, and was on the staff at UMaine-Farmington from 2012-2015.

Kane played one season of college basketball at Husson University before transferring to UMF, leading the Beavers to two NCAA tournament appearances.

“I feel fortunate to return to Maine and have the opportunity to continue my career at such a special place as the University of Maine at Presque Isle,” said Kane. “It is an exciting time for the University since the recent move to the American Collegiate Athletic Association. I look forward to not only building on the recent success of the Men’s Basketball program, but also helping the Athletics program reach its great potential.”

Kane begins his duties on campus on June 1.

Husson’s Huston, Walls honored

Two Husson University baseball players recently earned regional accolades.

Catcher Sam Huston was named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III All-New England team, while pitcher Ben Walls was named to the D3baseball.com All-New England region first team. Huston was also named to the third team.

Huston, a first-team, all-conference selection, batted .323 with 13 doubles and three home runs this season while driving in 35 runs and scoring 23 more.

He was also stout behind the plate, committing only three errors in throwing out 75 percent of would-be base-stealers. Huston’s 13 doubles led the NAC, and he has 24 doubles and 50 RBIs in 82 career games.

Walls and Huston are the second and third Husson players in program history to be picked to the D3baseball.com All-New England team.

Walls posted a 6-2 record and a 1.77 earned run average and one save in 10 appearances this season.

The two-time NAC second-teamer recorded 43 strikeouts and allowed only 57 hits, and led the NAC in complete games with seven.

Walls ranks among Husson’s all-time leaders in wins, ERA, strikeouts, saves, appearances and games started.
