At 111 years old, Doris Farrar, of Freeport, Maine, is one of the oldest residents living in New England. She also claims the title of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s oldest fan.
Farrar celebrated her 111th birthday on Tuesday. As a birthday wish, she sent Brady a letter asking to meet him, though she has yet to hear back.
“She’s amazing. She walks with a walker. She sends letters. She’s just awesome,” Sheila Michaud, told WGME of Farrar.
While interviewed by the Maine television station during her birthday party this week, Farrar sang happy birthday to herself and danced with a nurse at the retirement community where she lives.
Born in Bar Harbor in 1906, Farrar moved to Connecticut when she was young then spent much of her life living in Massachusetts. She moved back when she was 104 years old.
“I didn’t ask to be 110,” Farrar said in an interview with The Forecaster last year. “I didn’t even think I’d see 90. But I can’t expect to be healthy as the dickens forever.”
She is among the members of the exclusive club of supercentenarians, someone who has lived to or passed their 110th birthday.
About 1 in 7 million people to reach that milestone, according to L. Stephen Coles, the co-founder and executive director of the Gerontology Research Group
“I’ve interviewed more supercentenarians than probably anyone else, trying to find out what they have in common,” Coles told Smithsonian Magazine. “The answer is almost nothing.”
