A midcoast man is out of the hospital and starting rehab more than a month after he was hit on his bike by a box truck.

Kevin Lee has traveled the world by bike, but these days he’s getting around on a different set of wheels.

It’s his first day at New England Rehabilitation Center, after spending more than a month in the hospital.

“The time when I was out of it, I was actually dreaming of riding every day,” Lee said, in spite of the nightmare that followed his last ride.

“I remember feeling sort of vulnerable for some reason, ahead of a school bus, but I had no idea what happened,” Lee said. “I have no memory of what happened.”

Police said Lee was riding along Route 1 in Waldoboro when he was hit from behind by a box truck.

“Well, I think the side-view mirror probably just spun me on top of my bike,” Lee said.

The crash left him with a broken pelvis, plus injuries to his heart and jaw.

Lee said he relies on the kindness of strangers as he travels the globe. It also gives him purpose, helping him battle depression.

“I will be afraid for a while on the road, and that’s just something you acclimate by doing,” Lee said. “You change by doing. You can’t sit in your bed and overcome fear.”

Waldoboro police said their investigation into the crash is ongoing. The driver has not been charged.
