The Scarborough school budget has failed for a second time.
Tuesday’s vote came down to whether or not Scarborough residents were willing to pay extra taxes for a larger education budget, and for the second time this year, the town said “no.”
It only took a little over 80 residents to decide the winning vote; 1,930 people voted against, while only 1,847 people voted for the budget, which means school board officials have to figure out a new solution to present to residents.
The $47.2 million budget would have raised property taxes nearly 3 percent.
The first school budget had less than a quarter of a the town vote, and this version of the budget had about 500 voters less.
School board officials haven’t released any information on when they will start the process all over again, but they have exactly six weeks to get it done before school is back in session.
