Thunderstorms and lightning that swept through northern and eastern Maine on Sunday afternoon left about 5,000 Emera Maine customers without power, according to a company official.
In Aroostook County, crews were working to restore power to an estimated 2,800 people, spokeswoman Judy Long said around 4 p.m.
A storm that included wind and hail took down power lines on Route 1 in the Washington County community of Whiting later in the afternoon, leaving another 2,300 without service.
Emera Maine estimated that power would return to most affected customers by about 6:30 p.m.
