ORONO, Maine — Samantha Wagg and Libby Riedl each had a goal and an assist and the University of Maine Black Bears had a 30-3 edge in shot attempts in a 3-1 field hockey victory over the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Sunday.
UMaine evened its record at 1-1 while Quinnipiac fell to 0-2.
Wagg opened the scoring off a penalty corner 15:17 into the game.
Emily Hindle sent the ball to Wagg at the top of the circle and she was able to drill a shot that skipped to the right of diving Quinnipiac goalie Lily Golini.
Ella Mosky expanded the lead early in the second half off another penalty corner.
Riedl settled the corner pass and got it over to Wagg, who passed it to Mosky positioned to the right of Golini. Mosky was able to divert the ball past Golini.
The Bobcats answered just 5:38 later as Valerie Perkins received a pass from Dayna Barlow and made a nifty move to get around UMaine goalie Emma Cochran and deposit it into the open net.
But Riedl clinched the win with 1:34 remaining following a nice run by Brianna Ricker down the left flank.
Ricker got around a defender and stickhandled toward the cage before sliding the ball across to Riedl, who made a quick move and swatted it home.
Cochran finished with two saves for the Black Bears while Golini wound up with 13. Quinnipiac back Payton Mickey was credited with a defensive save.
Riedl paced UMaine with six shots on goal and Ricker had four.
UMaine will entertain Bryant University on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before heading to the University of Richmond for a pair next weekend.
