BASKETBALL
Eastern Maine Board #111 of IAABO Certified Basketball Officials is seeking individuals in the region area who are interested in becoming a certified basketball official. Classes will be offered in Hampden, Corinna, East Millinocket, Ellsworth and Rockland/Thomaston. The first class will be on Sunday, Sept. 24, at Reeds Brook Middle School in Hampden for all those in who wish to become certified, then the dates and times for the regional classes will be announced. The class involves 16-20 hours of classroom work on the rules, a written rules test, then participants would have two sessions of floor work culminating in a floor test of officiating an actual game. There is a course fee of $110, which includes rulebooks, class materials and all testing. AUGUSTA — The fourth annual Dirigo Fall Basketball League will start play on Sept. 30 and run through Oct. 28. The pick and play series lets teams play one or both days on a weekend. Fees are $125 for two games per day, or $250 for four games on a weekend. Games will be held from Bangor to Saco. The league is open to teams in grades 3-12. BANGOR — “The Basics of Basketball Coaching and Playing,” an interactive program for anyone interested in coaching, playing, or learning more about the game, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 12-Oct. 31, at Eastern Maine Community College’s Johnston Gym. Course components include development of coaching philosophy, system development, execution of fundamentals, and improving knowledge in all phases of the game, and open discussion and on-court elements. ELLSWORTH — Woodlawn has announced its 2017 Big Lobster Invitational Croquet Tournament will be held through Sunday, Sept. 10, sponsored by Woodlawn Croquet Program. The 2017 Big Lobster Invitational Croquet Festival, aka “the Big Lobster,” includes a unique blend of six- and nine-wicket competitions in various Down East settings, including views of Acadia National Park, and featuring meals of Maine lobster. The event opens with a reception and barbecue for the players on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at The Common Good in Southwest Harbor. The first two days of the tournament are the 9-wicket doubles at the Claremont Hotel’s two courts and Tina Hinckley’s two courts in Southwest Harbor. The tournament will shift to American-rules-sanctioned, six-wicket play on Friday, Sept. 8, for two days of block play using the Woodlawn Court and several courts in Southwest Harbor. Play begins at 8 a.m. on Friday and will continue through Sunday when the six-wicket championship games will be held at Woodlawn, ending around 2 p.m. In addition to Maine players, there will be participants from Florida, Nebraska, Missouri, Maryland, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. BREWER — Brewer Youth Hockey is partnering up with the Boston Bruins to offer a special program for new skaters. Presented by Friendly’s, the program is available to 50 boys and girls ages 5-8. The $100 fee includes a full free set of CCM equipment, a professional personalized fitting, and four weeks of on-ice instruction at the Penobscot Ice Arena in October. The participants are then encouraged to join the Brewer Youth Hockey/Dunkin Donuts Learn To Skate program that meets weekly through the winter. BANGOR — Bangor Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for its 2017 Fall Soccer Program. Teams will practice one day per week and play games on Saturday mornings at the Union Street Athletic Complex. Open to children in grades K-1, 2-3 and 4-6. The fee is $35 for Bangor residents, $45 non-residents, but there is a $10 late fee for registrations after Sept. 14. There will be a meet and greet on Saturday, Sept. 16. TRIATHLON
SOUTH FREEPORT — The 14th annual Lobsterman Triathlon takes place on Saturday, Sept. 16, at Winslow Park. The nationally recognized USAT-sanctioned event attracts athletes from across the United States and Canada. The Lobsterman Triathlon includes an authentic Maine lobster bake following the race. Athletes will complete a 0.93-mile swim, a 24.7-mile bike and a 6.2-mile run. LobsterJAM athletes will compete in a separate wave, in a smaller field of athletes, all whom are raising funds for a good cause. Athletes can compete in the individual Olympic race, as part of an Olympic relay or in the Olympic Aquabike. Every athlete participating in the LobsterJAM will be raising a minimum of $150.
