Police in South Portland are looking for a driver who allegedly struck a woman who had stopped to check on another motorist who had just struck a moose Monday night, according to the Portland Press Herald.

Stephanie Smith of Windham was standing at the side of Cummings Road, checking on the driver of a Toyota Corolla, Press Herald employee Michele McDonald, who had just struck a moose.

Smith was standing at the open driver’s side door of the Corolla when a passing vehicle clipped the door and hit Smith, knocking her down.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Smith didn’t stop. Smith was conscious and alert when an ambulance to her to Maine Medical Center.

None of the witnesses got a good look at the vehicle, police told the Portland Press Herald.

The moose survived the initial impact with McDonald’s car and ran off into a wooded area. The front end of McDonald’s car was severely damaged.
