One person died Sunday night in a car crash in Belfast.

Police arrived to find the car in flames off the side of East Waldo Road. The driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was the only person in the vehicle, and no other cars were involved.

Police are withholding the driver’s identity pending notification of family members, Sgt. Dan Fitzpatrick of the Belfast Police Department said Monday morning.

The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office is reconstructing the crash, and police say they don’t yet know why the car crashed, and the body will be sent to the Maine medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.
