The driver who careened through downtown Bangor on Monday evening crashing into several vehicles and a light pole suffered a medical problem just before the crash, according to Bangor police.
Around 5:40 p.m. Monday, a 36-year-old Bangor man, who police didn’t name, was driving a white sedan down State Street when he suffered the unspecified medical problem. The car accelerated around the corner at Giacomo’s before hitting the sidewalk and accelerating up Hammond Street. It sideswiped two cars and took out a light pole before coming to rest at the intersection of State and Exchange streets.
No pedestrians or other motorists were hurt in the crash.
Witness Kimberly Colavito, a front-desk worker at Thomas School of Dance on State Street, said she was stunned at how fast the car was going.
“No one was out there, probably because it was raining,” Colavito said Monday. “Usually there are people out there.”
Police said the driver of the sedan didn’t suffer any serious injuries, but an ambulance took him to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for an evaluation.
