A couple in Massachusetts said their lives are “changed completely” after a neighbor shot and killed their golden retriever, Boston television station WCVB reported.

Krissy Dashner and Pate Bates of Lakeville told the station they let their two dogs off leash for a run on their nine-acre property Sunday night, and one — a golden retriever named Walle — went onto a neighbor’s property and was shot.

The neighbor told WCVB he felt the dog was threatening his family and his chickens, saying the animal was growling and showing his teeth.

Bates acknowledged that “people have a right to defend their livestock, if that’s what they’re doing,” but said, “I really wish that he had come and talked to us” instead.

The couple said the loss of the dog leaves a void in their family.
