An elderly woman from Eliot died late Monday night when fire swept through her second floor apartment, according to the Maine fire marshal’s office.

The Hanscom Road fire was reported around 11 p.m. Monday inside a garage. Beverly Webber, 83, lived on the second floor above that garage, and is believed to have died in the fire, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

The Maine medical examiner’s office will need to examine the remains to confirm her identity, McCausland said.

Webber’s son and grandson lived in the house attached to the garage, and both escaped the fire.

Ralph Webber III, 57, attempted to save his mother’s life by rushing into the apartment above the garage, but was forced to jump from a window to escape the flames. He suffered a broken hip in the fall.

“Fire investigators say the heavy damage to the building is making their investigation into the cause difficult,” McCausland said
