A storage center and a small strip mall are the latest additions to Stillwater Avenue near the Bangor Mall.
Across from the Chipotle and Chik-Fil-A and next to Papa John’s, at 570 Stillwater Ave., the three-store strip mall will house a restaurant, a retail store and an Aspen Dental office. The 9,440 square-foot building will share a parking lot with Verizon, Supercuts, Subway and Bangor Braces.
Stonefield Engineering and Design, a New Jersey-based firm, is the registered developer, according to city planning documents.
Meanwhile, a three-story, 21,600 square-foot storage, climate-controlled space is being built at 410 Stillwater Ave., according to the project application. MRS Inc. & LTI Inc. are the listed developers.
The number of stores and restaurants on Stillwater Avenue — one of Bangor’s more retail-saturated thoroughfares — has been steadily growing in the last decade, according to Sean Gambrel, a Bangor city planner and historic preservation officer. In April, the building housing a former Circuit City was demolished, but in the past five years, several restaurants have been added, including Chipotle, Kashi Hibachi, Elevation Burger and Chik-Fil-A.
The new developments come amid a period of uncertainty for the nearby mall, which lost Macy’s as an anchor tenant early this year. The mall’s owner, Simon Property Group, was at risk of defaulting on an $80 million loan, analysts last month told the BDN.
