The Maine State Police and the Maine fire marshal’s office are investigating the death in a mobile home fire in Whitneyville as “suspicious.”
A fire destroyed a mobile home at 54 Middle St. in Whitneyville early Saturday morning, and firefighters who responded to the scene discovered a body inside, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.
Fire marshals were called to the scene, and they later asked the state police to respond as well, McCausland said.
Investigators from the state police and fire marshal’s office were at the scene all day Saturday and planned to return Sunday, McCausland said.
He said investigators are treating the death as “suspicious.”
The body was taken to the Maine medical examiner’s office in Augusta, where an autopsy was scheduled for Sunday morning.
McCausland said anyone who was in the area of Middle Street in Whitneyville between 8 p.m. Friday and 4 a.m. Saturday to contact the state police dispatch center in Bangor at 973-3700.
