The driver, an older man whose identity is being withheld by police, died at the when his silver Toyota Corolla hit a tree around 6 p.m. along a portion of Route 202, near Boynton Road, according to police. No passengers were in his vehicle.

Buxton police said they “have information” that two males in a pickup truck removed the driver from the totaled vehicle but left the scene of the crash before emergency rescuers arrived, according to a Wednesday morning release.

Speed was likely a factor in a crash, police said. Saco police assisted Buxton with the crash reconstruction. The case is under investigation.

The state medical examiner’s office has not yet issued a cause of death.
